Rebecca Wing is among the brightest young stars of British gymnastics. Part of a new wave of very talented and exciting gymnasts, Becky is an extremely stylish, mature and elegant young performer who stands out for her high level skills, great dance ability, and for the beautiful quality of her work. Hers is undoubtedly a name to look out for in the build-up to the 2008 Olympics.
Rebecca was born July 15 1992 and comes from Farnborough in Hampshire. Having spent most of her early childhood dangling from climbing frames or balancing on various pieces of furniture, she started gym by attending a Sunday morning recreational class at the age of 4. A year later she joined a local gym club (Hart Gymnastics in Fleet) and then, when she was 6˝, her coach at the time recommended she move on to Pinewood Gymnastics Club near Wokingham in Berkshire, where she was soon training 22 hours a week with coach Natalie Ryan. Becky stayed at Pinewood until the end of 2004 when she moved to Heathrow GC in Hounslow (Greater London). She now works with a large group of coaches, headed by Vince Walduck. Rebecca enjoys all four pieces of apparatus; her favourite piece is floor, but her best is beam.
Becky already has an extraordinary competitive record both nationally and internationally. Despite belonging to an extremely strong age group, she was twice overall British champion – at ages 9 and 11 – winning both compulsory and voluntary national titles along the way. In her first year in the espoir division, Becky took all-around silver, bars bronze and beam gold at the 2004 British Championships. She is now a member of the espoir national squad, having previously been on the World Class Start squad for several years, during which time she attended training camps in Deva, Romania and Tata, Hungary. Internationally, Becky won all-around gold competing for Pinewood in the Youth section of the 2003 Malar Cup in Sweden. She represented GB for the first time in a 3-way Youth International in the Netherlands in May 2004, leading her country to a comfortable victory over Holland and Germany, with the added bonus of the individual all-around gold medal.
Becky lives at home with her parents, sister Jenny, a cat, a rabbit and two guinea pigs. Outside of gym, her favourite things to do include going on MSN and the TBGN message board, as well as shopping. Becky’s favourite school subjects are French and Art, and her biggest ambition is to compete in an Olympic Games or World Championships.
